Chris Christie has a 37%-46% lead over Gov. Jon Corzine in today’s Quinnipiac University poll. Christie leads Corzine 49%-31% among Independents, 51%-34% among men, 41%-39% among women, and 54%-30% among white voters. Corzine leads 74%-14% among Black voters.
Republicans back Christie 87%-4%, while Democrats support Corzine, albeit with less intensity, 69%-14%.
In South Jersey, which Quinnipiac defines as Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland and Cape May counties, Christie has a ten-point lead over Corzine, 44%-34%. Christie leads in the shore counties (Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic) by 31 percentage points, 59%-28%.
In Essex and Hudson, Corzine leads 53%-27%.
The race is a statistical dead heat in a region comprised of Bergen, Passaic, Union, Middlesex and Mercer counties, with Corzine leading Christie 42%-41%. In Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Warren and Hunterdon counties, Christie’s lead is at 55%-27%.
