At their convention last night, Cumberland County Republicans picked former Surrogate Art Marchand and Greenwich Township Mayor George Shivery as their assembly candidates in District 3, which Republicans have talked up as a potentially competitive race.
Marchand and Shivery won over Robert Villare, a medical doctor from Gloucester County. The party does not release vote totals as a matter of policy, but one insider said the results were not close.
The two assembly seats in District 3 are occupied by the newly sworn in Celeste Riley (D-Vineland) and John Burzichelli (D-Paulsboro), who has been in office since 2002.
As expected, Republicans also chose former Vineland Solicitor Rick Tonetta, businessman Sam Fiocchi of Vineland and Lawrence Township Committeeman Tom Sheppard, who ran last year, for freeholder.
