In her reelection bid, Bloomingdale councilwoman breaks from Republican Party

Discouraged by GOP discord in Passaic County, Bloomingdale Councilwoman Jennifer Altfield on Tuesday changed parties and will seek reelection on a ticket with Democratic Councilman Mark Crum.

Altfield filed paperwork with the County Superintendent of Elections Office, changing her party affiliation to Democrat after 40 years as a Republican.

“This was the right move for me personally, and, frankly, the best way forward for all the residents of Bloomingdale,” Altfield said in a statement.”The turmoil within the Passaic County Regular Republican Organization has not been helpful in governing at the municipal level. I have been working alongside my Democratic colleagues for years, and today I am publicly declaring my intention to officially join the Democratic Party, which I believe best serves the residents of Bloomingdale.”

Municipal chairman Bernie Vroom, who also serves as a Bloomingdale councilman, said, “We are welcoming her with open arms. Jen was one of two Republicans on the Bloomingdale Council and has been selected as our Council President for the past two years by the Democratic majority. She is a hard-working public servant with a keen sense of how to get things done.” In her reelection bid, Bloomingdale councilwoman breaks from Republican Party
