Kutiman is an Israeli multi-instrumentalist who mashes up obscure (but funky) YouTube clips into musical hybrids that need to be seen as well as heard.
His website, ThruYou, features seven songs, all stitched together from user-generated videos. “The Mother of All Funk Chords” layers clips of a guitar teacher, two theremin players, and an 11-year-old trumpet player. “Just a Lady” teams up a singer, a synth player, a flutist, and a harpist with a banger of wind chimes. Kutiman links to the original clips, which are delightful (see, for instance, soul drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie’s totally charming 16th-note shuffle demo). But the real virtuoso performance you’ll see here is Kutiman’s own.
