BELLEVILLE – It was a searing contest that at the time looked like the breeding ground for a lot of infinitely injured egos, but last year’s municipal elections in which a team backed by Assemblyman Ralph Caputo (D-Belleville) opposed Mayor Ray Kimble’s slate, appears all but forgotten.

“Naturally, I’m endorsing Ralph,” said Kimble, who this year reconciled with Caputo, as did state Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Newark).

Like Rice, Kimble backs both incumbents: Caputo, and Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker (D-Newark), who face a primary challenger from former Assemblyman Craig Stanley of Irvington.

Kimble said he was willing to call last year’s virtual bloodbath a draw: Caputo stunned Kimble and his allies when he challenged them and forced them from small town complacency into election year battle mode.

Then the Kimble team turned around and defeated Caputo’s allies. Last year’s foes are this year’s friends in Belleville
