Assembly Will Vote Tuesday on Same-Sex Marriage Bill

ALBANY—It’s official: the State Assembly will take up a bill on Tuesday that would legalize same-sex marriage, a spokesman confirmed.
When asked earlier today, Speaker Sheldon Silver said that the bill would have the votes to pass in his chamber. No one doubts this, in part because an almost identical bill passed the Assembly in 2007.
Austin Shafran, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, said Smith’s position on the measure hasn’t changed: he supports it, and is working to get enough votes to ensure its passage, at which point he will bring it to the floor. No word on when that may be.
