Carl Block, the Mayor of Stafford since 1983, was defeated by John McMenamin, a former police lieutenant, 58%-42%. Block, is a Republican and the Ocean County Clerk; McMenamin had the backing of Democrats. GOP gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie campaigned for Block.
Robbinsville Mayor David Fried was re-elected with 64% over Councilwoman Sonja Walter. Fried's two running mates won Council seats. Gov. Jon Corzine was backing Walter, while Fried had the support of Christie.
Republicans regained control of the Evesham Council, with Kurt Croft, Debbie Hackman and Joe Howarth ousting incumbents Mike Schmidt, Alica Marrone and newcomer Jill Whipple.
West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh won a landslide re-election, defeating Councilman Charles Morgan with 71% of the vote.
Jersey City Ward D Councilman William Gaughan, who is the Jersey City Democratic Chairman and the Chief of Staff to Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise, has won 50% of the vote and will be re-elected without a runoff.
In a special election for Mayor of Island Heights, James Biggs defeated Diane Ault Cullen by a 63%-36% margin. Biggs, who served as Mayor from 1974 to 1978, and Cullen, a former Councilwoman, were seeking the seat of David Siddons, who passed away in October.
In a close race for Commissioner in Monmouth Beach, William McBride (494), Susan Howard (484) and James Cunniff (476), defeated Jennifer DiLorenzo (458). John Sheeran (428) and Robert Teevan (419).
In Cedar Grove, Joseph Chiusolo (1,188), John Zunic (1,037) and Patrick DeFrancisci (906) defeated Paul Lee (819) and three other candidates for Council seats.
In Verona, Jay Sniatkowski (82), Ken McKenna (741) and Bob Manley (637) defeated Santi Condorelli (538) and Ben Blinder (480) for Township Council setas.
In South Orange, Janine Bauer (993), Michael Goldberg (973) and Nancy Gould (933) defeated Mary Washington-Nieves (536), Stephen Steglitz (514), and Dale Favors (486).
In the Tinton Falls mayoral race, Michael Skudera defeated peter Maclearie, by 159 votes, 52%-47%.
