NISKAYUNA—David Paterson said he is considering Marc Shaw, one of his top deputies, to lead the M.T.A. after the resignation of Elliot Sander last week.

"We're going to try to do that quickly, and we're conducting a search now," Paterson said before touring a battery-test laboratory at the General Electric research facility here. He said he was "not at all" concerned about reports that Shaw would face a tough confirmation process in the State Senate.

Monday, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith did not comment on the idea Shaw as the head of the M.T.A.

"No one has raised Marc Shaw to me as a potential candidate," he said. "If they raise it to me, I will give you an answer."

Shaw was appointed to the same post by George Pataki and served from 1996-2001.
