The Hurt Locker (in limited release 6/26) is a terrifically gripping thriller about a U.S. bomb squad in Baghdad. Trust us: You won’t want to miss it.
Sergeant Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) are short-timers, at odds with their adrenaline junkie of a staff sergeant (Jeremy Renner, in a standout performance). Director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Strange Days) sticks to their point of view, steering clear of politics — and zooming in on the daily, heart-stopping dramas these soldiers endure — and the results are compulsively watchable. N.B.: Watch out for celebrity cameos by Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, and Guy Pearce; blink, and you’ll miss them.
