ALBANY—There was a lot of vitriol in the statement State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. put out yesterday, telling Senator Tom Duane to name the supporters he says he has for the same-sex marriage bill or "shut up."
Diaz Sr., despite saying in the statement yesterday, "[I]t is a disgrace that Senator Duane is playing this mind game," insisted this morning that he a Duane are friends and even, "We kiss each other, we hug each other."
"I was just trying to smoke them out," Diaz said, referring to the supporters who have not gone public. He cited the NY1 survery that showed the same-sex marriage measure only has 20 affirmative votes on the record.
Also, this bit about the kissing is apparently true. When I asked Duane he said to an aide, "Mark, when was the last time I kissed Senator Diaz?"
"Today," Mark said to him.
"Today," Duane said.
And what kind of kisser is he?
“Very chaste,” Duane replied. “As am I.”
