On a conference call with campaigns supporters, Gov. Jon Corzine and his campaign strategist, Steve DeMicco, said their internal poll has Republican Christopher Christie ahead by four percentage points, 42%-38%, with independent Christopher Daggett at 4%. In a two-way race, Corzine and DeMicco said Christie's lead widens to six points.
Recent independent polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports and Quinnipiac University have Christie ahead by eight and six points, respectively. A Republican Governors Association poll released today has Christie leading Corzine by fifteen points.
The poll was conducted before Corzine's latest wave of TV ads, which attack Christie on ethics. Sources say the buy was more than $750,000.
