Jersey City Councilman Jimmy King, who filed a complaint last month against Jersey City Councilwoman Nidia Lopez charging that she was actually a Florida resident, was arrested today and charged with extortion.
King, a former Jersey City Parking Authority director and head of a civic association, ran unsuccessfully for council last year on the ticket of mayoral candidate Lou Manzo, who was also arrested today.
According to a federal complaint, a cooperating witness was introduced to King by two unnamed people – a consultant and Jersey City official involved with the Housing Authority and school board. They allegedly agreed to accept $5,000 on behalf of king for help with zoning changes for a Garfield Avenue property if he was elected to the council.
The consultant, according to the complaint, told the coorperating witness at a later meeting: “[o]ne thing about Jimmy, even if he’s the only vote on the council, he’ll vote for your projects.”
