Monserrate Back as Committee Chair

ALBANY—State Senator Hiram Monserrate has indeed been reinstated as the head of the Consumer Affairs Committee.
The Queens Democrat was removed from that post in March, after he was indicted for slashing his girlfriend’s face with a piece of glass. The News reported this morning that Monserrate was given the leadership position back in conjunction with his return to the Democratic conference. It comes with a $12,500 stipend.
“The Senate Majority Conference leadership made a decision to reinstate the committee chairmanship and stipend of Senator Monserrate,” Senator John Sampson, the conference leader, said in a statement. “We did this in the interest of resolving all issues dating from before June 8th. At no point did Senator Monserrate request that we take this action.”
