Report: Elwell to resign

Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell will be the first elected official who was arrested on Thursday to resign, according to a report in The Record.

Elwell, who has been mayor since 2000, was arrested for allegedly taking a $10,000 bribe from a developer who was an informant for the FBI.

The feds netted a total of three mayors, two assemblymen, the Jersey City council president and many of other non-elected officials and consultants in Thursday’s sting.

Elwell was facing a competitive race for reelection against independent Councilman Michael Gonnelli.
