Secaucus Dems must meet to pick new mayoral candidate

The anticipated resignation of Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell will trigger a meeting of the local Democratic County Committee to replace him on the general election ballot. The new candidate will face Michael Gonnelli, a Democratic-turned-Independent Councilman who has been challenging Elwell as an independent. Elwell defeated public defender Peter Weiner by 414 votes, 57%-43% in the Democratic primary.

Deputy Mayor John Reilly will become Acting Mayor and will serve until the Township Council meets to replace Elwell with one of three names selected by the County Committee.
