Skelos Could Support ‘A Whole Group of Different People’ For State GOP Chair

ALBANY—Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos, the highest-ranking elected Republican in the state, refused to express support for Joe Mondello for another term as chairman of the Republican State Committee.

“I can support a whole group of different people, of which he is one,” Skelos said at a press conference.

Earlier this year, Skelos said that he would have a conversation with Mondello about his continuation as state chairman. Skelos said today the conversation has not yet taken place. Mondello is chairman of the Nassau County Republican Party; Skelos is from Nassau County.

Since then, Henry Wojtaszek and Ed Cox have begun gauging support for a run at the chairmanship (Mondello’s term expires in September), and Dan Isaacs is openly campaigning against him.

Through a spokesman, Mondello has repeatedly expressed his desire to continue in the post, despite criticism for some recent setbacks.
