Here’s some campaign material Bill Thompson’s people are handing out. It seeks to portray Michael Bloomberg as an out-of-touch, rich Republican, and to highlight Thompson’s biographical advantages, including the fact that he was born in New York City.
The material was provided to me by an interested reader. An aide on Thompson’s campaign did not dispute the material’s authenticity.
On the palm card, it says, “After eight years of a Republican mayor who looks out for the rich, it’s time for someone at City Hall who looks out for you.”
“The current Republican mayor stands up for Wall Street executives, developers, and the wealthy, but he’s ignored the hard-working people that make New York City great. Bill Thompson was born and raised in New York City. He attended our public schools. He knows our neighborhoods. And he understands the challenges we face every day because he faced them too.”
The talking points for supporters say pretty much the same thing, and refer to the mayor repeatedly as “Republican Mike Bloomberg.”
UPDATE: A Thompson spokesman called to dispute the characterization of the material. This person said the campaign is arguing that Bloomberg looks out for the rich, not that he himself is rich.
