One day after the Daily News reported that Councilman Kendall Stewart was distributing campaign literature erroneously claiming he had the support of colleague Rosie Mendez for his re-election campaign, she endorsed his opponent.
“I am proud to endorse him,” Mendez said of Stewart’s opponent, Jumaane Williams, at an event outside City Hall this morning. “But more importantly, I must be here today because when my name is used inappropriately, I need to make sure that everybody knows this is my candidate, this is my friend.”
Mendez was joined by Charles Barron and members from 1199 SEIU.
“I will never manufacture endorsements, I will never make fake endorsements,” said Williams.
When asked what, if anything, in Stewart’s legislative record they found objectionable, Barron said, “Look at the voting record and find out how many times he voted against the speaker or the mayor.”
Williams noted that Stewart was a supporter of extending term limits.
