Blowin’ in the Wind: Mary Travers

Mary Travers–of Peter, Paul, and Mary– died yesterday of leukemia at age 72. The trio’s best-known songs included “If I had a Hammer,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Most of the 1960s New York folk scene was made up of wide-eyed new arrivals (we’re looking at you, Robert Zimmerman), but Ms. Travers was a native. She had grown up in Greenwich Village listening to the Weavers and Pete Seeger with her parents; singing (and social justice activism) came naturally.

Technically the autumn equinox isn’t ’til September 22nd, but we’re inclined to feel that this inaugurates the Fall of Celebrity Death. We’re not sure we can take much more of this. Blowin’ in the Wind: Mary Travers
