Getting Ready for the Rain

The USTA is making some preparations for the rain that’s expected to hit town later tonight.

There are these little machines (see photo) getting loaded up in the hallways. They’re essentially vacuum cleaners for rain water. The last time we saw these things in the bowels of Ashe, we got rained out.

Also, thanks to the potentially bad weather, the USTA announced last night that a ceremony scheduled for tonight to honor Arthur Ashe’s induction into the US Open Court of Champions will be postponed.

The forecast at the moment is for all the rain to come down on Thursday night. Which would be a blessing, all considered, because the only scheduled match for that night is Nadal-Gonzalez, and they can easily make that up on Friday, a scheduled off-day for the men.
