Quinn Doesn’t Rule Out a Bloomberg Endorsement

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a Democrat, declined to rule out supporting Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is running on the Republican and Independence Party lines, against Democratic nominee Bill Thompson, the city comptroller.

At a press conference before the first City Council meeting since Tuesday’s election, Quinn was asked by Daily News reporter Frank Lombardi why she couldn’t endorse “the Democratic nominee for mayor. There’s only one.”

“I haven’t made a decision about what I’m doing in either of the run-offs or in the mayor’s race,” she said.

When asked if that meant she left open the possibility of a Bloomberg endorsement, she said, “I do not have any update on what I’m doing in any of the citywide races.”

She batted down the suggestion that her speakership could be in jeopardy if minority members of the Council revolt against her for not supporting Thompson, who is African-American.

“I have not heard that,” Quinn said. “I’m running for reelection and I’m confident I’ll be reelected.” Quinn Doesn’t Rule Out a Bloomberg Endorsement
