A week after her first hearing from the Supreme Court bench, Justice Sonia Sotomayor seems to be enjoying herself. The Washington Post’s gossip blog describes the scene at the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts gala:
Justice Sonia Sotomayor would have been the belle of the ball even if she had never left her table, so the room exploded when actor Esai Morales pulled the Supreme Court’s first Latino member onto the dance floor for an impressively confident salsa.
Those wild D.C. nights.
It’s only a little mambo (or salsa?), but after a lengthy confirmation hearing–which at this point seems designed to exclude anyone from the Court who might ever have done something remotely suggesting a human personality–it’s weirdly refreshing to see a justice letting loose, even a little bit.
The fall session officially begins next month. Over at Slate, Richard L. Hasen explains how Sotomayor and the liberal minority can “win by losing” on the Roberts Court.
