UMDNJ will pay $8.3 million settlement

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) has settled allegations that it paid illegal kickbacks to cardiologists and submitted false Medicare claims. To avoid a lawsuit, UMDNJ will pay about $8.3 million – about double the amount paid out by Medicare — to the U.S. government.

“The United States Attorney’s Office will continue its pursuit of any physicians or institutions who make referrals based on financial considerations rather than patient health,” said Acting First Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Larkins.
