The Asbury Park Press has endorsed a Democrat in the race for Ocean County Sheriff, where 81-year-old William Polhemus is seeking re-election to a ninth term. The newspaper went with a younger candidate, 65-year-old George Armstrong, a career law enforcement official. According to the APP, Armstrong switched parties two years ago “after reading a Press editorial critical of the Republicans’ good ol’ boy network that long dominated county politics.”
The APP backed the two incumbent Republican Freeholders who are seeking re-election with the support of Ocean County GOP organization.
In what may (or may not) be a sign of things to come – tomorrow – the APP criticized Polhemus for failing to appear before their editorial board.
