Lopez residency case going to trial

Jersey City Councilwoman Ward C Councilwoman Nidia Lopez failed to get a case against her dismissed and will have to fight charges that she is really a Florida resident in court.

Hudson County Superior Court Judge Maurice Gallipoli today denied Lopez’s request for summary judgment, according to Diana Jeffrey, an attorney for plaintiff Norrice Raymaker.

Lopez was originally sued by civic activist Jimmy King, who after losing the council election to Lopez in May pointed out that she took tax breaks on a Florida home she owns that were intended only for permanent residents of that state. Raymaker, who finished behind King in the same council race, took over the case from him when he was arrested on corruption charges.

Lopez’s trial begins October 26.
