ALBANY—Sandy the elevator operator is retiring.
The chatty, bubbly, longtime operator of the Senate elevators swung through the press room to inform everyone that she will end her 37 years of service to the state next month.
I arrived at the Capitol after Sandy’s glory days, but those who were around remember her for decorating the elevators on holidays and dressing up as a monster on Halloween. She has been the subject of LCA show skits. She chatted to everybody, including Governors Cuomo and Pataki.
After the last elevators were automated in 2009, operators like Sandy (if you were wondering, her last name is Raus) were re-assigned as cleaning staffers. Sandy is 62, “and proud of my age.” She will be spending more time with her children and grandchildren.
