ALBANY—Assemblyman Michael Benedetto has formed a campaign committee to look at a run for Jeff Klein’s State Senate seat, should Klein run for attorney general, should Attorney General Andrew Cuomo run for governor.

Benedetto had promised to do this previously, and now Benedetto for New York is registered with the State Board of Elections. (Although there’s no money in his account.) I asked Benedetto on the Assembly floor why he–a person who is by all accounts sane–would seek to join a body as esteemed as the State Senate.

“I consider myself a mature adult. I consider Jeff Klein a mature, reasoned adult and all our institutions need mature, reasoned adults,” Benedetto said.

Klein told me Benedetto had told him of the move, but didn’t think Benedetto would go ahead with a run should Klein opt to stay in his seat.
