NBC is experimenting with a “newfangled, pioneering-type” approach to local news, reports Felix Gilette: Daily Connection, a network-produced collage of NBC Universal programming to be distributed to local affiliates. So far, it’s been soft-launched in the Washington, D.C. market, but if it spreads more widely, it could save the network millions by replacing more expensive synciated programming. “Leftover news” is cheap.
“Call it a creative breakthrough in network synergy,” writes Felix. “Or call it a another example of NBC executives managing for margins, not ratings, a la The Jay Leno Show. But in either case, it’s a radical attempt to re-imagine local news programming at the station level.”
