Carter lost New Jersey four times

Jimmy Carter is the only President to lose New Jersey four times. Carter lost the 1976 New Jersey Democratic primary to an uncommitted slate of delegates that was expected to back California Gov. Jerry Brown, and by a 56%-38% margin, lost the 1980 New Jersey Democratic primary to Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy. Carter lost New Jersey twice in general elections: Gerald Ford won 50%-48% in 1976, and Ronald Reagan won 52%-39% in 1980.
