Democrats seeking a “soft landing” for Gillespie

Incoming Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-West Deptford) is planning to fire Patrick Gillespie from his post as the Executive Director of the Senate Democratic office and replace him with his own person, according to sources familiar with the Senate transition process. Gillespie was named to the post last March by Richard Codey (D-Roseland), who was ousted by Sweeney during a leadership battle this year. Democrats are searching for what was described as a "soft landing" for Gillespie, a longtime Old Bridge Councilman who has spent fifteen years on the Senate staff and worked in the executive branch while Codey was governor.

Gillespie, who came within 1,900 votes of ousting Assemblywoman Joann Smith (R-Old Bridge) in 1995, was the District Director for U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-Long Branch) from 1989 to 1993.
