In Which We Succumb to Splashy Definitive Year-End Listmania

It’s the gift guide‘s partner in end-of-year (or even better, end-of-decade) inanity: the superlative list.

Because without Time to select one, there might be no Person of the Year. Without New York the magazine, we probably couldn’t drum up Reasons to Love New York the city. And without every critic at The Times weighing in, we would have no idea what to like, much less buy.

Not to be outdone! The Observer offers its own festive year-end layer cake–in this case, a revival of a project from 2003. Then they were “Power Punks,” now they’re “The Insurgents,” but the concept remains the same: 50 young (this year, nearly all under 40), New Yorkers on the rise. You probably haven’t heard much about them yet, but you will soon.

They’ll be online tonight and in the paper tomorrow. Keep your eyes peeled.
