Today The Times has a map of the city’s gallery highlights, Manhattan only, broken down by neighborhood—Upper East Side, Lower East Side, Chelsea, West Village, SoHo.
But take note: not all of these neighborhoods will fulfill expectations.
“The Lower East Side is not the new Chelsea and probably never will be,” writes Ken Johnson in an accompanying article. “My own recent tour of the neighborhood’s galleries did not turn up anything likely to rock the art world, but it was not a bust either.”
For one thing, he finds that much of what’s available is “only marginally better than graduate student work.” Burn.
You will be reassured to read that the Upper East Side remains fancy.
