Times Quiet, Reporters Skittish

The Times has not been eager to provide details (“does not and will not discuss personnel matters“), so most of the layoff news thus far has been cobbled together from different sources online.

But today there’s some official word on the situation: the New York Newspaper Guild tells the A.P. that at least 18 employees lost their jobs on Wednesday and Thursday.

The mood inside the building is dire, reports The NYTPicker:

“You can’t rest on the fact that you once wrote a great story five years ago,” one reporter told us. “Now it’s all about what you did six months ago. Three. You’re being evaluated constantly, and if you don’t measure up, you’re gone.”
