Three Four Democratic members from Queens opposed the same-sex marriage bill that was just defeated: Hiram Monserrate, Joseph Addabbo, George Onorato and Shirley Huntley.
Monserrate, who was convicted of a misdemeanor assault on his girlfriend is already facing a primary challenge from Assemblyman Jose Peralta, who supports same-sex marriage. Addabbo just won his seat after defeating Republican Serf Maltese. It’s unclear if another more progressive Democrat could oust Addabbo.
Onorato, a long-time senator, represents the Astoria and Long Island City area. Up and coming Democrats in the area, like Assemblyman Mike Gianaris and outgoing Councilman Eric Gioia, could, theoretically, challenge him, in part, on the basis of this vote.
Huntley represents an African-American district in southeast Queens.
