A year ago, at the height of recession-crisis mode, CNN chief business correspondent Ali Velshi published his well-timed how-to book, Gimme My Money Back: Your Guide to Beating the Financial Crisis. Since then, it appears the Kenyan-born, Toronto-raised news anchor has been his own guide to beating the financial crisis, recently purchasing a $1.85 million condo at the Harrison at 205 West 76th Street with wife Lori Wachs. CNN, however, recently relocated Mr. Velshi to Atlanta, and anyway, Ms. Wachs works in finance in Philadelphia.
Mr. Velshi emailed The Observer with a candid explanation: “I bought it because I’ve been advising people for months to take advantage of low interest rates to buy a home, IF they have good credit and IF they are already thinking about it and IF they are not speculators. That said, I bought the place BEFORE I realized I’d be in Atlanta M-F!”
So, what happens to the lonely Harrison? Will the Equinox Gym-equipped, Robert A.M. Stern-designed building simply provide a pied-à-terre for the high-powered couple? “It’s probably a little roomy to be a weekend pied-à-terre, so we’ve actually just put it on the rental market, and I’ll probably rent something smaller in Manhattan,” Mr. Velshi said. He expects to be in Manhattan a couple of weekends a month, and in Philly the other weekends. “Basically, buying the apartment was eating my own cooking.”
