The chances for Republicans to win the Iowa governorship in 2010 became greater last Friday when Gov. Chet Culver announced that Abby Curran would manage his re-election campaign. Curran ran the 2008 congressional campaign of Linda Stender, possibly one of the worst races of the decade. After coming within 1% of ousting Mike Ferguson in 2006, Stender was viewed as a likely winner for Democrats. But her campaign was an unmitigated disaster. Her local supporters never got along with the Emily’s List imports who seemingly hijacked the entire operation. There was no coherent message. Stender offended a core Democratic constituency with an offensive TV ad – one of many examples of how the four-term Assemblywoman lost control of her own campaign. Republican Leonard Lance won easily.
