Quinn: Ford’s Shift on Marriage Not Like Schumer, Clinton

When asked about Harold Ford Jr., the city’s highest gay elected official, Council Speaker Christine Quinn, said anyone has the right to run for office, but that Ford’s comparison to Chuck Schumer and Bill Clinton to explain his newfound support for same-sex marriage was inaccurate.

“I welcome everyone who now wants to be for gay marriage. I’m very happy when people change their opinion. That said, Congress Member Ford did vote twice to change the United States constitution,” Quinn said, when asked about Ford during a press conference in City Hall this afternoon.

“Although I welcome his switch, I don’t think the comparison he made to Senator Schumer or President Clinton were fair ones, because as far as I know, neither Senator Schumer nor President Clinton ever believed in the constitutional amendment. They did change their position on the Defense of Marriage Act, but neither of them ever went that incredibly far step, in my opinion, of supporting a change to the United States constitution.”
