Schundler is first ex-gubernatorial candidate to get cabinet post in 68 years

Bret Schundler becomes the first unsuccessful major party candidate for governor to become a member of the Governor’s cabinet since Robert Hendrickson became State Treasurer in 1942.  Hendrickson was a Republican State Senator from Gloucester County (and a former Senate President) when he ran for governor in 1940; Democrat Charles Edison, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy and the son of inventor Thomas Edison, beat him 52%-48%.  In those days, before the new State Constitution, the Legislature picked the State Treasurer.  Hendrickson remained in the post until 1948, when he won a United States Senate seat.
