Former State Sen. Thomas Cowan, a Jersey City Democrat and labor leader who spent sixteen years in the Legislature, died on Sunday.  He was 82.

Cowan was elected to the State Assembly in 1977 and moved up to the Senate in 1983.  He spent ten years in the Senate before losing the 1993 Democratic primary to Nicholas Sacco, the mayor of North Bergen.  He was the business administrator of Local 825 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Visitation will be held on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the McLaughlin Funeral Home in Jersey City.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11AM at St. Aedan’s Church in jersey City.
