For the first time in twelve years, Bergen County Democrats are preparing to select a slate of freeholder candidates on their own, sans the tutelage of their former chairman, Joseph Ferriero. That has one of Ferriero’s guys, incumbent James Carroll, more than a little scared. Sources say that Carroll begged Bergen County Democratic Chairman Michael Kasparian to cancel Thursday night’s convention due to the weather because he felt he could benefit by an extra week. Carroll and Elizabeth Calabrese are seeking party support for another term in a race that includes six other candidates. Freeholder Tomas Padilla is not seeking re-election, and the concern among Democrats is that the Carroll could be a casualty in the race for the open seat. There are three candidates from the northeastern region of the county, including Carroll, splitting votes from that region.
