Diegnan bill to ban train operators from cell phone use gets committee review

The Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee has scheduled a discussion at their hearing tomorrow on A-407, which prohibits public transportation operators from using a wireless telephone or electronic communication device while their vehicles are moving.

Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield) introduced his legislation after investigators found that the operator of a commuter train in California that killed 25 people was the result of an operator sending text messages.

“Some people have become so addicted to their electronic devises that they put others in danger without even thinking about the consequences,” said Diegnan. “It’s unfortunate that we even have to consider a bill like this, but history tells us it’s a real risk.”
