The chairman of the Republican Party in Senate President Stephen Sweeney’s (D-West Deptford) home county criticized Sweeney for criticizing Governor Christopher Christie’s budget speech yesterday, calling it “petulant.”
“Senator-Freeholder Sweeney’s criticism of Governor Christie isn’t remotely credible,” said Gloucester County GOP Chairman Bill Fey
Sweeney is also the director of Gloucester County’s all-Democratic freeholder board.
After a get-tough speech in which Christie declared a financial state of emergency and outlined $1.6 billion in budget cuts yesterday, Sweeney accused Christie of circumventing the legislature and ignoring Democrats’ overtures of bipartisanship.
“In one breath, Senator-Freeholder Sweeney says we need to make spending cuts, and in the next breath he opposes every cut Governor Christie proposed,” said Fey. “It’s typical Steve Sweeney and he can not have it both ways. It’s the same warped logic that convinces him it’s ok to take on the enormous responsibility of being Senate President while refusing to give up his seat on the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders.”
