Hudson Sheriff may lose party support in re-election bid

Hudson County Sheriff Juan Perez may be on his way out.  Sources say that several top Democrats, including State Sen./North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, want to dump the one-term Sheriff from the Hudson County Democratic Organization line.  Perez is a close ally of Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, the Democratic County Chairman, and his sudden vulnerability is a strong indication of Healy’s diminished clout among Democrats following the arrest of some of his political lieutenants last year.

Perez ousted incumbent Joseph Cassidy in the 2007 Democratic primary by 1,233 votes – a 50%-48% margin.  Cassidy’s numbers were boosted by a heavy turnout in District 33, where Union City Mayor Brian Stack, running off the line for State Senate, won 75% of the vote.
