It pays to be nice to George Gilmore

Former NFL star Jon Runyan has learned a valuable lesson: be nice to George Gilmore.  By showing respect to the powerful Ocean County GOP Chairman, Runyan is now the odds-on favorite to be the Republican candidate against freshman U.S. Rep. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) in a district that appears to favor the GOP.  Gilmore’s candidate, retired Rear Admiral Mo Hill, a Toms River Councilman, is dropping out of the race.

Last year, Republican Christopher Christie won Adler’s district by 35,947 votes over Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, 56%-39%. In 2008, Adler became the first Democrat to win his seat since 1884 when he beat Medford Mayor Christopher Myers 52%-48% following the retirement of twelve-term Republican Jim Saxton (R-Mt. Holly).

Runyan’s next lesson in politics will be fundraising. Adler has been a prodigious fundraiser, raising more than any other freshman congressman. It pays to be nice to George Gilmore
