Iowa Gov. Chet Culver, whose re-election campaign is being managed by former Stender for Congress campaign manager Abby Curran, trails his Republican challenger by sixteen percentage points, 52%-36%, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released today. Curran’s mere presence in Iowa is helpful to the GOP. Curran ran the 2008 congressional campaign of Linda Stender, possibly one of the worst races of the decade. After coming within 1% of ousting Mike Ferguson in 2006, Stender was viewed as a likely winner for Democrats. But her campaign was an unmitigated disaster. Her local supporters never got along with the Emily’s List imports who seemingly hijacked the entire operation. There was no coherent message. Stender offended a core Democratic constituency with an offensive TV ad – one of many examples of how the four-term Assemblywoman lost control of her own campaign. Republican Leonard Lance won easily.
