Tracey Thorn (formerly of Everything But the Girl) has a new album, Love and Its Opposite, coming out in May. But you can download the excellent “Oh, the Divorces!” single for free right now.
And we suggest you do: The track has a lovely (if a bit melancholic) appeal, describing what has become a rite of passage as one gets older—witnessing friends splitting up and divorcing. The lyrics are poignant (“And each time I hear who’s to part/ I examine my heart/ See how it stands/ Wonder if it’s still in safe hands”) and are combined with a sweet melody and, of course, Thorn’s clear-as-a-bell voice to make the song rather irresistible. Hey, can all musicians start doing this, please?
