New Jersey is in severe financial crisis because for years elected officials have been able to make irresponsible and short-sighted decisions without any restraint.  Future governors may not have the discipline Governor Christie has to control state spending, so we must now lock up how much the state’s budget can grow each year and throw away the key so New Jersey is never again in such peril.

New Jersey has been taxed and spent into this fiscal crisis and we must eliminate all waste and make all levels of government more efficient. The state has to be the leader, which is why I proposed this spending cap.

Last November, the people told us they are tired of being overtaxed and voted for a smaller government that spends less. This November, they should get the chance to further take back their state by voting to constitutionally restrict Governors and Legislatures from recklessly growing the state’s budget by more than 2.5 percent in any one year. This lock will be an important tool to prevent another economic crisis that now confronts us.
