The Park Avenue Armory’s sizable main hall was filled to the beams with Francorati on Saturday, March 13, when the Lycée Français de New York held its 11th annual fund-raising gala, honoring French finance minister Christine Lagarde-effortlessly elegant in a royal purple gown that matched the tablecloths.
Actress Kelly Rutherford, whose daughter attends the Lycée, had just finished filming the third season of Gossip Girl and described herself as “in straightforward mom mode”-something of a relief, since her GG character is currently mired in a love triangle between her current husband (Matthew Settle) and her ex-husband (Billy Baldwin). She said the show’s older cast members on the show don’t pal around off-set quite as much as their 20-something counterparts do: “Matthew and Billy and I are not getting an apartment together. Yet.”
Enticing auction items included a trip to St. Barth’s with wardrobe consultation by Catherine Malandrino, a private dinner prepared by chef Eric Ripert (burp) and a special-edition Hermès bag valued at $29,500-but Susan Fales-Hill, the writer, producer and indefatigable socialite, wasn’t bidding. “It’s the new economy, and I also retired my credit cards before the Depression 2.0,” she said. Her beaded peach gown? “It’s a Valentino from the old economy. I am permanently on the overpriced-wardrobe diet, and I’m shopping in my closet. I’m ready for everything but meeting the pope and a safari in Africa, and I don’t want to meet the pope.”
Ms. Fales-Hill has a novel coming out (One Flight Up, to be published by Atria in July)! “We’ve been seeing a lot of men behaving badly recently, and my book will show that the women are not just sitting at home knitting like Penelope, waiting for the cheating men to come home–they might even be cheating themselves,” she said. “It’s very naughty.”
