Third District Republican congressional candidate Jon Runyan plans a formal campaign kickoff sometime in the latter half of next week, according to his campaign consultant, Chris Russell.
Russell said the event will take place in Mount Laurel, though no exact date has been set.
Runyan, 36, is a former NFL lineman. He finished his career this year with the San Diego Chargers, but spent nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, who have a large fan base in this South Jersey congressional district.
Despite early skepticism from Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore, the Ocean County Republican Organization endorsed Runyan last weekend, making him far and away the favorite Republican to take on freshman U.S. Rep. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill).
Runyan faces at least one opponent in the Republican primary: Toms River resident Joseph Rullo. Former Tabernacle Committeeman Justin Murphy, who finished a strong third in the 2008 GOP 3rd District congressional primary, has said several times that he intends to run but has not made any recent statements. Former Barnegat Committeeman John Novak as of late last month was mulling a primary run as well.
