Haledon line an issue for Passaic Dems

Newly-elected Passaic County Clerk Kristin Corrado, a protégé of former Passaic County GOP Chairman Peter Murphy, is already causing trouble for Passaic County Democrats.  Last week she awarded the Passaic County Democratic Organization, Inc. line to insurgent Haledon Mayoral candidate Dominick Fusco and his Council slate.  Fusco is an acolyte of Haledon Democratic Committee Municipal Leader Gerald Volpe – who fielded a slate to take on incumbent Mayor Domenick Stampone and Council President Maha Kandis.

Stampone blocked Volpe from being appointed to a $100,000 position with the Manchester Utilities Authority, which prompted a split in the local Democratic Party.  Volpe recruited Fusco and his council slate to try and hold off a challenge from Stampone – who has fielded a full slate of County Committee candidates in an effort to oust Volpe.

Corrado largely ignored the body of the law stating that the Chairman of the political party controls who receives the line during a primary.  PCDO Chairman John Currie, Sheriff Gerald Speziale, and Freeholders Terry Duffy and Pat Lepore are all plaintiffs with Stampone, Kandis, and council candidates Mounir Almata and Michael Johnson in an action filed last week protesting Corrado’s decision. Their suit alleges Corrado with ignoring the law that requires candidates seeking the party line designation belonging to an incorporated entity to get permission from that entity. Stampone and his slate requested the designation from PCDO, Inc. and were given permission by the county organization and Currie.  In addition, state law allows local candidates to request of county candidates the right to “bracket” with them on the ballot. Stampone’s team requested and was granted that bracketing by Freeholders Terry Duffy and Pat Lepore.

This could become a drawn out legal challenge that may not be resolved for the next several weeks. Most election law experts believe, in the end, Stampone and his ticket should receive the PCDO, Inc. line and be bracketed with his Democratic supporters and allies.
